Half-day practical course
This half-day course is an in-depth, practical introduction to the PHEA assist role, designed for paramedics, 3rd-year paramedic students, nurses and doctors with an interest in pre-hospital emergency medicine. Taught by an experienced multi-disciplinary faculty of doctors and critical care paramedics, the course builds confidence and real-world assisting skills through a mix of short lectures, hands-on workshops and high-fidelity simulation.
You’ll learn how to prepare the environment for success, support safe drug preparation and administration, and assist with airway management from “Plan A” through to failed airway and surgical airway support, including:
• Preparing for PHEA: team roles, checklists, set-up, optimisation (positioning, oxygenation, access, monitoring)
• Drugs used during PHEA: common drug regimens, drawing up, labeling, cross-checking, timing and apnoeic phase support
• Difficult airway approaches: ETCO₂ use, recognition of failure, and assisting with failed airway algorithms
• Assisting with surgical airways: equipment familiarity and the assistant’s role during eFONA/surgical airway procedures
The course is run in small groups with plenty of coaching, repetition, and structured feedback, with a focus on transferable skills you can apply immediately in pre-hospital and ED/critical care environments.
